Kula School

Kula Elementary School is a K-5 school located on the slopes of Haleakala Crater, Island of Maui, Hawaii.  Its doors opened in 1964.  The school sits on fourteen acres of beautiful countryside which once served as pasture land for horses and cattle.  The campus offers a panoramic view of the coastlines, towns and cane fields below.

The school consists of three main classroom buildings, 12 portable classrooms, an administration building, library and cafeteria.  Construction of a two story classroom building was completed in August of 2000, and currently contains the three fifth grade classes, a special eduation classroom, a teacher workroom and a new Mac Computer Lab.

The student population comes from a diverse community made up of vegetable farmers, flower growers and cattlemen.  Doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers and other artisans are included in the professional group.  Also there are those employed in the hotel industry, construction and other trades, the sugar and pineapple industry and those who are self-employed.

The word KULA means plain, field, open country, pasture.  It also lets one know that it is dry-land farming, rather than wetland farming country.  The name also means source, and Kula, Maui is the source of most of this island's produce from teh farms.  Anything grown, from carnations (poni-moi blossoms) to onions (aka'akai) thrives here.

Kula School is named after the community it serves.  The community extends fro the Omaopio area up to the elevation of approximately the 3000 foot level of the Crater Road area, including the Ulupalakua Ranch area.  Although our community is spread over a large area, Kula is a friendly, giving cohesive community.
